    About the Book

    Edit

“I hate the fact that people make fun of my disability. I wish they could see me the way I see me.” – Lauren, age 23

“Telling people about my disability can be hard at times. But if I give my heart away to someone, that will take me down the trail of love.” – Kathleen, age 29

During a 12-week course facilitated by Mary Ann Jansen, OSU, from the Women Writing for (a) Change writing school, and Pam Rieke, Adult Matters Coordinator from the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati, thirteen adults with Down syndrome shared their heartfelt stories, poems and life experiences. This 80-page book (black & white text) contains a description of how the course was facilitated, selections from each of the writers, and special sections on “My Fears” and “What is Down syndrome?”

This book will raise your awareness about Down syndrome and demonstrate how we all thrive when we are listened to, appreciated and accepted within our communities.

“Writing Our Lives” was underwritten through the generous support of ArtsWave Cincinnati and The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./US Bank Foundation. Profits from the sale of this book will be shared between Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati and Women Writing for (a) Change.
