    About the Book

    Edit

1.4 billion people in the world live on less than a $1.25 a day. That is a concept that is hard to imagine. Until you see a place like Kibera. Kibera is the epicenter of extreme poverty. One of the largest slums in the world, Kibera houses nearly a million people in an unbelievable 2.5 square kilometers.

These photos were taken in Kibera in 2009 while on a photo assignment for the Jim Karaffa Business Academy for Women (JKBAW). JKBAW is a non-profit program that teaches women how to run their own business, helping them raise themselves and their families out of the slum of Kibera. The Heart of Kibera features images from that 2009 initial graduating class, as well as from the environment the women of JKBAW strive to overcome.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of The Heart of Kibera will go to JKBAW to help ensure that this important, groundbreaking program continues to give those in need a hand up, rather than a hand out, and breaking the terrible cycle of extreme poverty.

    Jeff Ballard
    Orange County, CA. USA

Born and raised in South Bend, IN, Jeff grew up playing sports. The passion for photography also came at an early age. While the athletic career never came, his passion for sports and photography never waned. In 2006 Jeff combined his two passions – sports and photography – to create InPlay Photos. An effort that started by shooting pictures of his own kids’ sports careers grew into providing other players’ parents, as well as their friends and extended families, with the in-game action shots of their favorite athletes. Through his own life experiences, Jeff also began to develop a passion for helping to make the world a better place. He began to turn his camera toward social and economic causes such as ALS and extreme poverty. Through his photography Jeff has helped organizations such as the Jim Karaffa Business Academy for Women in Nairobi, Kenya, the Friends of Kibera, and the ALS Association of Orange County promote their organization and gain support for their causes
