About the Book
I spent four days at Tadoba from June 29 - July 3, 2010. I reached there just after the schools reopened in India to avoid the summer vacation rush. In addition, the monsoon had just begun and the forest was lush green. Although this meant that the animal sightings, especially the tiger would be infrequent, the weather was glorious and the colours fabulous.
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve in Chandrapur District, Maharashtra, India. It was created in 1955 and is Maharashtra's oldest National Park. It includes Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. The park derives its name from "Taru" the local tribal deity, and the Andhari River that meanders through the forest. It is one of India's 28 Project Tiger Reserves. The National Park is 623 km² in area, consisting of two forested rectangles of the Tadoba and Andhari range. Along with around 43 tigers, Tadoba Tiger Reserve is a home to 80 species of mammals, 280 species of birds, 100 species of butterflies, 26 species of spiders, 30 species of reptiles (including 25 species of snakes), 5 species of amphibians, and 23 species of fishes. Thickly clad hills form the north and western boundary of the Tiger Reserve. To the southwest is a huge lake, which acts as buffer in between the Park Forest and the extensive farmland extending right up to the Irai Lake.
