The X-pressions are a series of abstract expressionist paintings by artist and designer Chris Kitchen. This book is a celebration of his work along with annotations throughout. The exhibition was displayed at the Liverpool Tate gallery and is a tribute to the late Mark Rothko whose work was highly inspirational to the artist.



The letter X has always held a certain mystic, people often use it in reference to the unknown or to convey an element of “the strange”. The X-pressions exhibition celebrates the unknown and promts the viewer to look inside them self for the answers. The large scale, often monochromatic, colour-field paintings provide the perfect setting for abstract thought. Deep tones render the paintings and are intended to evoke an emotional response in the viewer that is open to individual perception. Whether it be conscious or unconscious the colours that surround us affect our mood, this exhibition will heighten you colour perception, make you more aware of the colours around you and how they make you feel.
