    About the Book

    Edit

The North Wales Lunatic Asylum has been abandoned since it’s closure in 1995.

My choice of theme for this series of photos is rooted in an interest in the buildings both architecturally and from a social history perspective. Whilst in their working lifetime the buildings are architecturally beautiful, functional and offer a fascinating document of the social and cultural history of the period in which they were in use, once abandoned for a period they take on a whole new identity.

Gone is the grandeur and the imposing architecture is only a facade to the decay that exists within. The functionality of the rooms within has ceased and it is replaced by faded glamour and a melancholic air of the building’s history and the lives of the patient’s and people who lived and work there. The sporadic signs of life add another intriguing element to the mood of the building harking back to it’s days as a working institution and I feel this only adds to the urgency of documenting the building before it succumbs to its decay and is either demolished or crumbles to the ground.
