About the Book
Eastlake—located in Chula Vista—is one of many thriving modern suburbs in Southern California. This particular region, like many across the vast swath of the West Coast, is littered with tract housing communities. The landscapes, homes, shopping centers, churches and occupational facilities share a common and distinct architectural synonyma, which creates a cognizance of aesthetic monotony. The community of Eastlake is nestled just south of San Diego, amongst rolling hills and can be accessed through a toll road. Towering walls and a toll requirement relay a sense of isolation and confinement. Most fascinating is the rate at which large-scale housing developments have been spawning throughout the Southern California region. The attention paid to communities similar to Eastlake has been steadily increasing, as these suburban developments are sought after by many modern American families seeking shelter beneath a canvas of exclusiveness that popular culture has manifested over the past decades. Aside from uniform landscape and architectural repetition, Eastlake seems to entice a lifestyle of convenience while attempting to obscure the reality of less tedious, more emancipated communities. Eastlake and other similar communities have gradually become the standard model of accommodation and advantage, in which a bolstering sense of disparity between community and outsider continues to linger.
