Emilia Olsen is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Working in various mediums from oil painting to acrylics and found object installations, mixed media to pen drawings that also sometimes even incorporating the use of photoshop, her way of working could loosely be described as schizophrenic, possessing an adolescent, girlish-edge. British portrait artist Chantal Joffe comes to mind, as Olsen’s images of young girls are not concrete representations and thrive in the sense that they are more than anything an idea of a person. Olsen’s other-worldly, outlandish depictions of young girls really speak to the adolescent attitude and erratic emotional state that I think is generally perceived of a young female in transition. In viewing her body of work, much of it is about the unexpected. With moodiness and nonchalance, and a conviction to an unfinished, visceral process that is reactionary and sporadic, her work relies on subjectivity and feel. - John Edmonds, ABOUT-FACE
