Our proposed exhibition, What, What Else, brings together Justin Richel’s testing of pictorial illusion with Chambliss Giobbi’s refusal to highlight it. Richel sees artifice as inseparable from the medium of painting, while Giobbi turns toward what remains when illusion is no longer held as primary. Placed side by side, these approaches open out to a shared space of attention where painting is encountered as both question and object, image and support, something made and something still unfolding. The works live in a state of suspension, allowing them to remain active rather than settled, as if the questions themselves are still in the process of being asked.
