At the archeological site of El Kab (ancient Egyptian Nekheb), between Luxor and Edfu, we find traces from all periods of Egyptian history, from the Final Paleolithic (ca. 7000 BC) down to Coptic times. The principal deity of El Kab was the vulture‐goddess Nekhbet (“She of Nekheb”), who, with the cobra‐goddess Wadjet of Lower Egypt, was one of the two tutelary deities of pharaoh himself, as well as being the goddess of Upper Egypt. During the Belgian missions of 1977, 1979/80, and 1981, parts of a settlement from the Greco-Roman period and several burials from the Predynastic necropolis were excavated.
