About the Book
In my childhood in Poland, I was struck by the phrase gołąb pocztowy — the “post pigeon,” a bird imagined as part of the postal world, carrying messages across distance. That early curiosity stayed with me, and years later it led me into the quiet, committed world of pigeon racing in Ireland.
For a year I followed this tradition through sheds, lofts, and back gardens. What I found was not a sport of spectacle but a rhythm of care: birds hatching in warm wooden boxes, men handling them with hands shaped by other kinds of labour, and a daily routine built on trust between species.
The drama of pigeon racing lies not in release but in return. After the burst of wings on race morning comes the long wait — hours spent watching the sky, listening for the faint clap of a bird choosing home. In that waiting, the sport becomes a meditation on uncertainty, loyalty, and the limits of control.
This project is about pigeons, but also about the people who shape their lives around them. It is about a tradition slowly receding from public view, the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next, and the fragile thread that connects home to open distance.
These photographs trace that world: its routines, its characters, its small triumphs and quiet losses. They honour the men who welcomed me into their lofts, the birds whose journeys carry their hopes, and the childhood question that first set me on this path — what a “post pigeon” truly is, and where it might lead.
