    About the Book

    Edit

This book is not an academic commentary. It is a pastoral one. It is written for people who have heard these parables their entire lives and need help seeing them with fresh eyes — because the fresh eyes are not optional. The crises facing humanity in the 21st century are too severe for us to keep reading Jesus through the comfortable filters of tradition and familiarity.

We are living through: the largest displacement of people in recorded history, with over 117 million forcibly displaced globally as of 2024; a climate emergency that scientists describe as an existential threat to civilizational stability; an epidemic of loneliness and mental illness, particularly among young people in wealthy nations; the rise of authoritarian movements on every continent; artificial intelligence reshaping what it means to work, create, and be human; and extreme inequality in which eight individuals own as much wealth as the poorest half of humanity.

Into this world, the parables of Jesus arrive not as antiques but as live dispatches from the future — from a vision of human community that we have not yet achieved but that, the stories insist, is both possible and already breaking into the present.

This expanded edition includes additional parables not covered in the original text, deeper engagement with contemporary issues, and reflection questions for individual and group use. It is offered in the hope that these ancient stories will do what they have always done: disturb the comfortable, comfort the disturbed, and send everyone out differently than they arrived.
