About the Book
Mariposa the Monarch butterfly has a very long way to go.
Carried far by the wind, she is tired, hungry, and searching for something she isn't sure she'll find. The fields her great-great-parents once knew are disappearing. Finding food is getting harder every year.
Far below, a group of Girl Scout Juniors has a question of their own: What does our community really need?
When they discover that monarch butterflies are in trouble, they decide to do something about it — right at their own school. Together, they plan a surprise for their whole community: a real, certified Monarch Waystation garden, registered with Monarch Watch and planted with native flowers chosen with care.
Mariposa's Journey Home weaves two stories into one — a butterfly searching for a safe place to land, and a group of determined girls who decided to build it for her.
Inspired by the real Bronze Award project of Girl Scout Junior Troop #41111 at Magellan International School in Austin, Texas, this bilingual English/Spanish book celebrates community, conservation, and the quiet power of doing something good for the world — even when no one is watching.
Written and illustrated by the scouts themselves.
