    About the Book

    Edit

Minor to Major is an authorial photobook by João Gloria that explores a conceptual progression through a carefully constructed visual narrative. Built as a sequential body of work rather than a simple collection of images, the book operates within the language of contemporary photobook practice, where editing, rhythm, and juxtaposition are central to meaning-making. The sequence develops from restraint to expansion, reflecting both a technical evolution—expressed through variations in exposure, tonal range, and compositional complexity—and a more introspective, perceptual shift that unfolds across the pages.
The project emphasizes the relationship between light, contrast, and spatial construction, using minimalism and controlled framing to guide the viewer’s attention. Alternating between tighter and more open compositions, the visual structure introduces a cadence that suggests movement and transformation, reinforcing the underlying “minor to major” transition. This progression can be understood simultaneously as a formal shift in tonal intensity and as a metaphorical passage from subtle, understated imagery toward a more assertive and resolved visual language.
Produced using high-quality digital printing processes, the book aligns with professional photobook standards, prioritizing image fidelity, tonal depth, and consistency across the sequence. The physical object is conceived as an integral part of the work itself, with layout, pacing, and page interaction contributing to the overall experience. In this sense, Minor to Major functions not only as a photographic portfolio but as a cohesive artistic artifact, situating itself within the broader context of independent publishing and contemporary photographic discourse.
