    About the Book

    Edit

My name was Grace, a 14-year-old girl who lived in New York City in 1904. I lived with my mother, father, and two little sisters – twins named Amelia and Avery. My mother was a stay-at-home wife, and my father made decent money in a glass factory. I had yet to work anywhere. However, one day, my little sister Avery had suddenly gotten terribly sick, and my father couldn’t afford the proper medication for her, so out of guilt, I had forced myself to help out by working in a nearby clothing shop down the street. On my 3rd day of working, I saw someone outside who made me feel completely infatuated with them. He was an Italian boy named Luca, the same age as me. We locked eyes, and it felt as though the world shifted between us. We started talking, and a few weeks later, we were officially friends. Luca and I felt a strong connection, even though we both knew such a pair like us was completely uncommon in the area we lived in. I had also found out that the reason Luca had moved from Italy to New York City was that his family wanted to have more opportunities for him so he could be more successful in life. One day, something terrible happens to Avery that causes me to completely shut down and stop talking to everyone, including Luca, the love of my life.
