About the Creator
Gayle Hallowell is a UK-based botanical artist and photographer whose practice is grounded in a long-standing background as a scientist and veterinary surgeon where she has developed a deep curiosity about living systems and their interconnectedness. Her work builds on research-led inquiry and process-driven experimentation, using photography to explore how plants and places shape our emotional and physical wellbeing. Focusing on botanical imaging, soil, roots and trees, she develops images that translate complex ecological ideas into visual form, making scientific thinking more accessible and relatable. Through patient observation and slow, mindful methods, she creates work that invites viewers to pause, notice and re-attune to the quiet activity beneath our feet and around us. Recent projects, including Beneath Our Feet and Dendrophonia, raise questions about how we value soil and the possibility of plant communication in a changing world.
