    About the Book

    Edit

My Greatest Fear is Apathy is the debut poetry compilation of youth spoken word artist and college student, M.J. Seja. It serves as her introduction to the literary community but also an archive of the work she wrote from the time she was fourteen to sixteen years old. Her goal with this book is to be as evocative as possible; to rebel against the political apathy that is so easy to slip into under systemic oppression by connecting the human race with art, as it seems to be our only real key for survival.

The book is separated into two parts, Inside and Outside. Inside is dedicated to internal politics and Outside addresses outer politics. This divide explores up close how the inner world often is formed as a response to the external world, marking the beginning of a life-long journey of self discovery with lines like, "I have deep desires for superficial things and shallow lusts for important things/I'm a dreamer" and the melodramatic intensity that comes with first loves, "You are not the sun/But you may be the reason it rises", and the heartache that comes with being perceived, "It's not even just what you'll think of me/It's what you thought of me/And than how you'll use that against me", and the existential crisis that comes with getting older, "The ascent towards sixteen is what I imagine an atheist ascending to God after dying is like." In Outside, expressing disillusionment towards the apathetic adult world that she will soon be entering, "You roll your eyes through the side of your mouth/You think because it is not your fate it is not your place to have an opinion?" and herself rolls her eyes at "A world view that pales in comparison to the size of the world." Yet also acknowledging with an open heart the universal pain of being alive with insights like "Maybe every single human is secretly malfunctioning" and ending with optimistic call to action of "I think the world is just beginning/because I'm watching the sunset and I know it will rise soon tomorrow
