    About the Book

    Edit

Born Garry Leibovici in Bucharest, Romania, in 1930, Garry Lavon’s early childhood was filled with family, faith, and ordinary joys—until World War II shattered everything. At just thirteen years old, Garry endured the horrors of the Budapest Ghetto, witnessed brutal atrocities along the Danube River, and survived transports that claimed the lives of his parents. In a moment that would change his fate, Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg pulled him from a death march, saving his life.

After liberation, Garry rebuilt from nothing. Reunited with his younger brother, he eventually immigrated to Israel, fought in the War of Independence, and began forging a future defined not by loss, but by determination. In 1956, he and his beloved wife Sylvia settled in Cleveland, Ohio, where he became a successful luxury home builder, raised three children, and built a life grounded in love, resilience, and unwavering optimism.

A survivor, soldier, husband, father, and grandfather, Garry Lavon’s story is one of extraordinary endurance and choice—the choice to say “yes” to life, to kindness, and to hope. His journey stands as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring legacy of survival.
