    About the Book

    Edit

The book features fifty-one brilliantly detailed black and white photographs of the Portland, Maine waterfront in the 1980's at the end of the working waterfront fishing era. Captured with an 8x10 camera, the rich and lyric beauty of the photographs captures a cast-off environment inhabited largely by absence. The introduction by Herb Adams establishes the precise historical context of Portland amidst its transition to an unknown future.

    South Portland

I was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in Windsor Locks. From my very first experiences in the darkroom as a boy, I have been utterly devoted to this medium. I graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Photojournalism in 1974. I landed in Boston and worked for Children’s Hospital Medical Center as a neuroscience photographer. I transitioned into commercial assignment photography and moved to Maine in 1977. Together with my now-late wife, fine artist Dana Trattner, we raised two children who are adults with wonderful lives of their own. I love discovery through travel and have an enduring pursuit of natural and vernacular landscapes. Certain moments of light, subject and framing move me with what Edward Weston called the “flame of recognition,” when the world seems poised in the breath-hold of a moment. I'm a master printer and my fine art work embraces the traditions of film photography and the advances of modern digital media.
