About the Book
This catalog presents the exhibition of the Berkeley Master of Design (MDes) Class of 2025, showcasing the final thesis projects completed in the program’s culminating studio. The MDes is a professional graduate degree offered by the College of Engineering and the College of Environmental Design, centered on design for emerging technologies and informed by critical, socially engaged practice.
Across three semesters, students develop skills in design process, prototyping, communication, and critical inquiry while examining the impacts of technologies such as artificial intelligence, extended reality, sensing, and spatial computing. The final studio requires students to create artifacts that advance positive outcomes for people, culture, the environment, and society.
Each thesis defines a meaningful design problem, situates it in socio-technical context, and proposes a considered response supported by research and experimentation. The Fall 2025 catalog highlights these investigations into “problems that matter,” offering a concise entry point into the cohort’s work and the accompanying written theses.
