    About the Book

    Edit

Growing up in London’s East End in the 1930s, David had already begun his own fight against fascism, defending his Jewish community from the intimidation of Oswald Mosley’s black shirt thugs. When war is eventually declared with Germany on the day of his wedding to Rachel, he is prepared more than most to serve his country to rid the world of Nazi tyranny. What he would not have foreseen then is the four-year odyssey that will take him across oceans, into battle in North Africa, capture and escape from prisoner-of war camps, and months hiding from the enemy in Nazi occupied Italy. This is the story of an ordinary army conscript’s fight to survive and the heroic deeds of equally ordinary people who chose to provide him shelter at his hour of need.
