About the Book
Each year since 2020, we have far exceeded our annual goal of 350 new miles, with most years exceeding 500 new miles. We knew our luck would run out eventually, and we fully expected 2025 to be our first low-mileage year. A life transition and new routines had us doubting our bandwidth to get out. We carefully made plans that would allow us three big wins in the limited time we anticipated—finishes in two big parks (Big Bend and Grand Teton) and a third in the smaller Pinnacles National Park. We schemed to check out Santa Rosa island in Channel Islands. And eventually, the new rhythms settled. We felt our freedom again. Summer plans extended and we executed our first visit to the stunning Isle Royale National Park. We accomplished our biggest mile day to date of 26.3 miles with full packs in Yosemite and our biggest elevation gain day to date of 6,534 feet in Olympic. We hiked 609 new miles over mountain passes and through overgrown forests. We camped in Big Bend on the coldest night of the year and soaked in a creek at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on the hottest day of the year. It was both everything and nothing we expected.
