About the Book
In this Advanced Typography project, students explored the dimensional and material possibilities of typography using digital fabrication tools such as 3D printing, CAD, and parametric design. One standout project emerged from a creative accident: a failed print due to layer separation—normally a critical flaw—was embraced and refined into a spiral, slinky-like typographic form. The process reflects the playful spirit of the class, where experimentation and mistakes become catalysts for innovation. Inspired by the origin story of the classic slinky, which itself was born from a spring manufacturing error, this piece embodies the potential of failure to spark creativity. Students worked with diverse materials including plastic, ceramic, and gelatin to challenge conventional ideas of typographic form, function, and legibility. The result is an engaging, tactile object that bends the boundaries of type, offering a dynamic interpretation that invites both visual and physical interaction.
