    About the Book

    Edit

This collection of poetry and prose was borne of the exceptional passion, creativity, and individuality of dancers. Inspired by improvisational and choreographic movement exercises that took place over a day-long workshop, these pieces capture the power of the dancer’s voice. They remind us that just because dance is a silent art form, it doesn’t mean that dancers have to be silent. Enjoy an intimate glimpse into the minds of performing artists and explore the vast worlds that live within them, waiting to be explored.

This workshop and collection was produced by Pangea Dance Collective, a concert dance company based in New York City which seeks to celebrate the voices of its performing dancers by giving them the freedom and agency to tell their stories. These endeavors are part of a larger initiative to create a healthier, more equitable dance world full of artists who are eager to speak up for themselves.

    Pangea Dance Collective
    New York, NY

At Pangea Dance Collective, we believe in the power of dance as a universal language that can transcend race, religion, gender, geographical borders, and everything that divides humanity. We are committed to respecting the whole artist and regard the dancer’s body as an archive that holds incredible stories. As such, our works reflect and rely on the unique experiences of our dancers in the hopes that we can make connections with diverse audiences. The Dance Speaks Workshop and accompanying anthology are produced by Pangea Dance Collective to help dancers recognize the power of their voices. Through choreographic and improvisational movement exercises, dancers are inspired to craft written pieces that span numerous forms and genres.
