About the Book
In 1944, after the Unangan (Aleut) people of the Pribilof and Aleutian Islands returned to their homes from a World War II US government forced internment in Funter Bay, Alaska, my father, Iliodor "Eddie" Kozloff, purchased an Argus 35mm camera. Iliodor taught himself to use the camera and in
1951, he began taking photographs to document the people and growth of St. Paul Island. This culminated into a collection of over 3,000 slides. The project of converting the slides to books started when Iliodor Henry Kozloff, the youngest child of Iliodor and Virginia Kozloff, realized that the slides were deteriorating from age. Henry began scanning the slides in 2010. In 2015, while visiting relatives on St. Paul Island, and after conducting a showing of the slides at the island senior center, it was decided that books needed to be made to preserve the content of the photographs. The first book titled “St. Paul Island, Alaska 1951 -1955” was finally completed on October 09, 2018. This book depicts various construction projects, deaths, births, weddings, Christmas and Orthodox Church celebrations, and other holidays, destruction by storms, various ships and planes, and other local activities depicting hunting, everyday life, berry picking, etc.
