    About the Book

    Edit

The camera is the great equalizer, stripping away the facade and leaving us vulnerable and exposed while capturing the moments of humanity we too often fear. These moments are best found among the daily lives of seemingly ordinary people. This is the essence of Humanist Photography, an approach concerned with the everyday human experience. Often, but not always, the focus is about those on the social or economic margins of society. Raw and authentic, it can elicit feelings like empathy and solidarity. It feels poetic and warm; the story of everything.

118 is an exploration of Alberta Avenue, one of Edmonton’s oldest and most diverse neighbourhoods. Dating back to 1894, Alberta Avenue is home to a wide range of ages, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. It feels quintessentially Edmonton: working class, newcomers, and a thriving arts scene amid the ample but equally cruel Alberta economy. Homes are relatively affordable and attract a younger generation looking for a start. Challenges persist, however, as addiction and poverty are hard to miss. But the area is slowly changing, or at least trying. I found myself naturally drawn to this juxtaposition, making it an easy choice for my first project.
