About the Book
Working in the public realm has always been of interest to me, making work on site in recent projects has identified stronger aspirations to create site-specific art . Travelling has been a great influence towards my desire to work in the public domain, it gave me the opportunity to discover and learn about different cultures, plus open my eyes to an array of arts. Being on site drives me to create, I have on site research and projects done in North Wales, Rhodes, and Europe.
Fundamental to my practise is the investigation, into lived in and un-lived in spaces, documenting transition and highlighting the unexamined remains of previous events. “The two kinds of space, intimate space and exterior space, keep encouraging each other, as it were, in their growth.” (The Poetics of space, Gaston Bachelard, Beacon 1994, P201)
My work is currently involved in the depiction of atmosphere and residue of place, I am drawn towards public spaces and site specific work. “If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then space which cannot be defined as relational or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place.” (Non Places, Marc Auge, verso 2006, p 78) My practise is fixed in the present and is a conceptual response to culture, identity and history.
My methodology has been to create works for people to interact with and experience senses that might remind them of a memory. To place one’s own personal experiences with an image and create a relationship with the work of a photographic medium, “like state, the camera is never neutral the representations it produces are highly coded, and the power it wields is never its own.” (The burden of representation, Essays on photography’s and histories, John Tagg 1988, 2002)
My recent work is based upon a secondary school ‘Brynrefail’ (www.brynrefail.gwynedd.sch.uk) the school is a space to search for traces and signs of activity and also a catalyst for the exploration of memory.
I have been interested in opportunities to interact with the staff and pupils; I see this social interaction as another layer, allowing me to further map traces and levels of resonance. This body of work is an attempt to share the experience felt in those locations, they reference to personal experience, but at the same time attempt to illuminate broader social public changes.
Currently I’m working on a new project based on movement, recording routes that acts as a framework for all others, using photography documentation and collecting records of conversation investigating in points and purpose of general public nature. I would be very grateful to further expand upon my ideas if I were to be called for an interview.
