My grandmothers are very different women; women who by all accounts would have nothing to do with each others’ lives if not for the bond made manifest by my parents, my siblings, and myself. My Grandmother Dorothy lives in Naples, Florida at the Audubon Country club with her husband Byron. There, days are spent with friends watching bald eagles in the center of the club, golfing, talking walks in the sunshine, and going for drives in her white Porsche.

Omi lives in Gary, Indiana in the house my father grew up in. Part of her week is spent there, at 8300 Indian Boundary, and the rest in an apartment on the lake in Chicago with her husband Jack. In Indiana, Omi walks on the beach collecting crinoids and working on ceramic sculptures in her basement. On Thursdays, without fail, she makes it back to Chicago by five in the afternoon to have a glass of wine with Jack, and they spend the rest of the week visiting friends and attending various arts events in the city.

The photographs that I have made of their lives are a document of how these two women relate to one another as my grandmothers; how they exist in their own very different and separate ways, but share the same place of importance in my life as the matriarchs of my family. The photographs are each a note that I have made about the lives of my grandmothers, not to show how different or similar they are to one another, but to serve as a record of who they are and what their lives are like now as I have known them.
