    About the Book

Shine A Light : Stained Glass Art Follows on from time James spent taking photographs of church art in Spain, but this time the photographs were taken in and around the Cranbrook area of Kent, England. Over 40 churches were eventually visited, from the larger 'Cathedral Of The Weald' of St Dunstan's in Cranbrook town right down to the much smaller and far more remote churches of places like All Saint's Church in Mountfield in the neighbouring county of East Sussex. James discovered that even in the smallest of little villages the area has some truly beautiful works of stained glass art, which he hopes he has captured on camera and presented here in his book.

Stained glass goes all the way back to ancient times but Christian stained glass art, as we all know it, has it's origins nearly one thousand years ago with the building of Europe's great cathedrals and that work trickled down to smaller community churches as well, but here in England, as a result of the reformation, most of the original windows have not survived. Instead what most of the churches have are from the Victorian era during a period of Gothic Revival. Some are also 20th century, but the majority of what can been is from the Gothic Revival period. And as James has discovered they have been created by some very talented artists, in some windows you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Renaissance Florence. Whatever the age of the windows they all have their innate beauty and James hopes the 175 photographs he has taken and put in this book has done some justice to that beauty. Some of the photographs were taken and or updated in 2022, but the main time spent was during 2017-2018.
