About the Book
Palestine UNSETTLED brings together 130 photographs made across Palestine between 2000 and 2007, during the Second Intifada.
Born and raised in Jerusalem, where he lived under Israeli occupation for thirty-two years, Steve Sabella approaches Palestine not only as a contested territory, but as a contested image. The struggle is also over who produces images, who controls their circulation, and which narratives they are made to serve.
Across 182 pages, the book moves through landscape, labour, ritual, daily life, rupture and resilience. Together, the photographs form both a historical record and an attempt to liberate the image of Palestine from the frameworks imposed upon it.
This is not a journey toward resolution. Palestine UNSETTLED ends with a leap of faith—an invitation to imagine Palestine beyond the image held hostage.
