    About the Book

    Edit

The Harmers of Marylebone’ follows the lives of Jack and Annie and their 10 children – seven girls and three boys – while they were growing up in Marylebone, London, during the early part of the 20th century. Their Bell Street home was behind and above Jack’s secondhand furniture shop, a condemned building, one of many slum dwellings destined for demolition. The book offers a unique insight into working class family life 100 years ago, with an emphasis on the vagaries and chaos experienced by the family trying to make a living out of the secondhand trade. Ten siblings were born over a period of 18 years. Five sisters wrote entertainingly about their early lives. These are their stories.
