About the Book
It is said that New York city is the greatest show on earth and is also known as the city that never sleeps. It is a city of big dreams and dazzling lights. It seems to have the tallest buildings, the biggest museums, and the best pizza. From the dazzling spectacle of Broadway to the Met’s and MoMA’s world-class galleries, the boutiques of SoHo, and the array of restaurants, New York city is a city of superlatives, and it lives up to every one of them. In May 2008, we spent almost 3 weeks in New York staying with our son Michael and daughter in law Kim and recently born Oliver. Their plush apartment on the 29th floor was located at 2 Gold Street in downtown Manhattan and only a stone throw from Wall Street. Kim and little Oliver were visiting Australia during most of our visit, so Michael was our fantastic travel guide and showed us his favourite New York gems. We walked and walked and used the subway and public transport like the locals. One extra outing was my experiencing a yacht trip with one of Michael’s friends when he repositioned his yacht berth from wintering at Staten Island and sailed to Hoboken. We set off in fine weather but ran into a storm and sailed in constant rain in the bitterly cold conditions. On the day we walked over the iconic 1883 built Brooklyn Bridge (a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge spanning the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn), we came across a large but peaceful street protest that was blocking the bridge. The protest was in response to the shooting and killing by 3 policemen of an unarmed African American called Sean Bell on the day of his wedding. The style of this photographic book is grouped into basically 16 subjects and genres and is indexed on page 4. This book contains my personal story, told mainly in pictures, which try to capture not only the cityscapes, buildings, streets scenes etc. but also the people and the moods and the emotions that are part of a big noisy city.
