About the Book
Produced for the Donald H. Sheehan Gallery at Whitman College in conjunction with the exhibition, Voyages: A Rick Martinez Retrospective, this catalog follows the trajectory of Richard (Rick) Martinez's powerful abstract creations. In addition to their formal strength, conceptually Martinez's artworks complicate the boundaries imposed by colonial histories and seek to map liminal cultural spaces. Curated from a cache of works discovered in his studio after his unexpected passing on January 26, 2020, the title, Voyages, references the tiny ships (one of Martinez's favored icons) sailing precariously across the colored seas of many of his canvases, while also paying homage to the shifted state of an extraordinary artist and a valued member of Whitman College's academic and creative communities.
