    About the Book

    Edit

Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) was born in Copenhagen. His oeuvre consists of portraits, nudes, landscapes, architecture and interiors, but it is his interiors that continue to draw the strongest response.

Leslie Hossack’s book “AT HOME: Hammershøi” presents a contemporary look at this turn of the century European artist and his wife Ida. The book features interiors of the couple’s private living quarters, portraits of their immediate family members and paintings of Copenhagen landmarks. “AT HOME” is Ida and Vilhelm Hammershøi’s biography, told through his paintings and Hossack’s photographs.

Scholarly books about Vilhelm Hammershøi have been published in several languages. This volume is not an academic treatise. “AT HOME” is an intimate gallery-going experience, not a forensic examination of the works of this great Danish artist.

Hossack photographed 100 works by Hammershøi held in over 20 public and private collections in North America and Europe. Significantly, she also photographed the interior of her own home, inspired by Hammershøi’s artistic process, aesthetic and motifs.

The book is divided into four sections: Hammershøi At Home, The Artist’s Patron, Hammershøi’s Copenhagen, and At Home In Ottawa. In addition to 115 full page colour photographs, “AT HOME: Hammershøi” includes texts by Leslie Hossack, a Foreword by Danish Ambassador to Canada Hanne Fugl Eskjær, as well as essays by Canadian art historian/curator Michel V. Cheff and Danish art historian/curator Annette Rosenvold Hvidt.

Leslie Hossack’s 21st century photographs of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s 20th century paintings shed new light on his life and work.
