    About the Book

    Edit

This soft-cover book is one of the most comprehensive anthologies of the work of the early 20th century architect, Julia Morgan (1872-1957). Julia Morgan, FAIA led the field of architecture by being a series of firsts, the first women to receive a degree in civil engineering, with honors, from the University of California at Berkeley in 1894, the first women in the world to graduate from the famed Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1902, again with honors, the first women to receive an architecture license in California in 1904, and now the first women to win the AIA Gold medal in the 164 year history of the American Institute of Architects which was presented to her posthumously in 2014. Written by various Julia Morgan scholars, the book includes essays and beautiful photographs that represent a sampling of the body of her prolific work. Morgan designed more than 700 buildings during her lifetime, the most famous of which is the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. With the presentation of this medal, Julia Morgan was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects where she has long belonged. Miss Morgan said, "My Buildings will speak for me long after I'm gone." Take a stroll through this wonderful volume to learn of the work and practice of this amazing woman.
