      About the Book

      Edit

Exposure is a large-scale book of images and stories in honor of our humanity––a collection of courage, candor, grace, longing, and heartache. It's a project which seeks to bring the human condition out of its steel box of pretense, prejudice, and misunderstanding, and back into the light of an average life and ordinary heart. It asks us to look deep into the face of our authenticity, in order to excavate the beautiful, whole, vibrant people we were each born here to be.

Our intent is to explore both the diversity and kinship of the human experience through storytelling and portraiture. The images that fill the pages of this book are breathtaking in both their sincerity and simplicity. It’s as if you’re looking into the eyes of your sister, friend, neighbor, or plumber, and listening to their faithful stories of what it means to be an active participant in this world.

We've called upon over seventy people from a wide range of life experiences, ages, and cultural backgrounds to participate in this project. We asked them to share stories from their lives which signified moments of impact or becoming. We then welcomed every participant to have their portrait taken and share their stories with us, which were recorded and later transcribed by April Tierney, to ensure a reliable and unrehearsed rendering.

Sitting with so many different people and looking into their eyes as they spoke about some of their most precious or painful memories, has been profound. Time and time again we have witnessed the incredible bravery that is required to move through difficult times, and the grace that is needed to navigate our way through this world. We see hundreds of people a day or week for which we know nothing about, and whom are each carrying their own weight in joy or grief. Some stories we have in common, while others we could have never imagined possible. But by stepping through the doorway of another's reality, we are welcomed into a kinship with all of life.
