In the summer of 2016, acclaimed fine art photographer Memphis Barbree arrived on the California coast to walk among and contemplate the giant of all trees, the Coastal Redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens. The Coastal Redwood forests she visited fill a narrow strip along the northern California coast—just out of reach of salt air and just within reach of fog. Climate conditions are changing quickly for the Earth and the existence of the Coastal Redwoods is more in danger than ever. Memphis carried on her journey a personal history of living closely with the forces of nature. The writings and photographs contained in The Redwoods Suites are a distillation of her time with the ancient forests. Memphis describes her work: "There are three Suites. What began as a visit with trees, evolved into a conversation with their energies and spirits, and expanded into an experience of seeing beyond the individual trees when the whole of the forest opened before, around, and in me."
