About the Book
Master Thesis Project University of Texas at San Antonio College of Architecture Abstract: San Antonio’s Southside is a vibrant community, although familiar with neglect. Often, communities such as this are vulnerable to predatory developers, leading to a slow erosion of the existing culture. This thesis attempts to encapsulate the characteristics of the community through the creation of a microcosm. By creating a microcosm, a seed of prosperity is planted that captures the community’s essence through architecture. More importantly it is also an attempt to combat gentrification – the consequences of a new development in lower income areas. This will be done through a careful site analysis that will establish a program and the architectural elements necessary to create the correlation between the proposed building and the neighboring community, fostering better livability and provide a communal gathering point.
