About the Book
“Hidden Places” primarily contains photographs taken during a year stay, between 2009 and 2010, on Jeju-do, a resort island off of the southern coast of South Korea. I was working as an English teacher and also had the pleasure of taking photojournalism assignments for the Jeju Weekly, a full color, English language newspaper. Projects for the paper exposed me to culture and environmental wonders that I probably would not have discovered otherwise. Besides traveling around Jeju Island, I visited Japan, and previously lived in Thailand, so a few images from those places have been included where appropriate. Some pieces in this collection are straight photos, which I consider visual haiku. Others are Photoshop compositions combined with the intention of documenting, within one frame, the highlights of an event that took place over a long period of time such as a fire or lantern festival or squid boat fishing trip. Lastly, personal stories told through montage were created from various “treasures” encountered while adventuring with my camera. This collection was on display at the Dougherty Art Center in June of 2012 and at The Jung Center of Houston in September of 2013.
