About the Ebook
One in four people suffer from some form of mental health condition every year. The overwhelming prevalence of mental conditions within the general public makes it vital that all primary health care professionals, such as opticians, have a basic knowledge of the realities of different mental health conditions. Primary health care professionals work involves day to day contact with the general public, and therefore inevitably their work will include consultations with mental health suffers. There continues to be stigmatisation and myths surrounding people with mental health problems, particularly so when compared to those with physical health problems. Stigma is apparent even among opticians, despite the level of contact that exists between opticians and patients with mental health issues. Research shows that mental health problems are as much a medical condition as are physical problems. Stigmatisation and myths surrounding the topic come from a lack of knowledge on the subject. Therefore, education on mental health among health care professionals is essential in order to remove stigma and improve clinical outcomes. ‘Dispelling Mental Health Myths in Optometry’ is a Computer Aided Learning tool that consists of an e-book and a structured learning programme. It provides information and education on the most prevalent mental health conditions (depression and anxiety), and some of the most stigmatised mental health conditions (bipolar disorder and schizophrenia), with the intention of educating opticians on the topic of mental health. The e-book and presentation are both educational resources containing facts on the realities of each condition, along with helpful strategies for opticians testing and treating patients with mental health issues.
