As I look for photographs to make on the street and other public places, I find myself often drawn to elderly people. I am not fully aware of why this is so. My selection of the title for this collection suggests that, in a way, I am engaged in self-portraiture. Most of the people shown in this book are my contemporaries.

Golf was a major part of my life for over sixty years. When I came up with the title, “Deep Into The Back Nine”, it seemed to be the right choice even though many people will have no idea what it means. That indicates to me that the photographs, like almost all photographs of personal work, are largely about the photographer.

They are all candid and close up with no effort to make the people look good. Old age is rarely a good thing. The images were made primarily in New York City, with additional pictures from Frankfurt and Baden-Baden, Germany, and Copenhagen, Denmark.
