About the Book
Paper cuttings (wycinanki) were originally used in 17th and 18th century Polish towns to impress stamps onto official documents. Peasant paper cuttings developed in the 19th century when coloured and shiny paper became readily available. They had a purely decorative character and each region developed its own characteristic style. Those from the Kurpie and Łowicz regions are the most famous.
The images presented here were compiled by Krystyna Szulecka with the assistance of the artists and other interested individuals and represent the work of 16 paper cutters, chiefly from Kadzidło village in the Kurpie Region of Poland, renowned for its diverse artistic talents. Most of the artists have been acknowledged internationally and their paper cuttings are held by museums around the world and are now collected by countless individuals.
Paper cuttings are a very fragile form of art, owing to the delicacy of the materials used, valued for the beauty of their form. When kept away from the light and protected from damage these small objects can survive for a long time.
Nowadays they have become highly desirable and collectable items.
This book hopes to provide a glimpse into their magnificence.
