    About the Ebook

This book shows some of my many portraits of musicians taken either at live gigs or in the studio. My deep interest in jazz as an amateur musician and frequent punter to gigs, either in a jazz bar or at the Bridgewater Hall, has led me to photograph these talented people. I have always taken photographs, starting as a teenager, then through my professional years as a Geology lecturer, and now as a full time portrait and stock library photographer. Other well known jazz photographers, including Herman Leonard have been an inspiration to me. In this ongoing project I aim to show the musician not only, as a creative artist, but to say something about their passion, personality and humour.

Professional photography by Phil Portus ARPS EFIAP DPAGB BPE4* I am a professional photographer based in south Manchester. I specialise in portrait photography and especially enjoy photographing musicians whether jazz, classical or pop, either in performance or in my Didsbury studio. I also enjoy capturing the day’s events of weddings from the bride’s preparation in the morning, to the couples’ first dance at the reception. My studio photography also extends to families and children to capture those moments to remember. Photography has always been my life’s passion and my camera is constantly at my side, with the aim of capturing the excitement of a festival, the splendour of a landscape or the gritty urban reality of a mill town in Manchester. My photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally and I have gained several awards from salon competitions. In recent years I have been awarded the BPE 4th crown and the international EFIAP distinction
