    About the Ebook

The work shown is a compilation of life in the slums and how hope and determination survives on less than 1 U.S. dollar a day. 75% of the population in Kenya lives within the slums (anywhere from 500,000 to 1,000,0000 people). They are government owned land sites and those who live there pay an average rent of 1,000 Kenyan Shillings a month (about $15 U.S.) Most cannot afford to pay rent and have to resort to other payment methods in order to survive. Disease is very common within the slums as well. Malaria, cholera, typhoid and yellow fever live within these communities as well as a suggested HIV/AIDS rate of over 90% of the population. These photographs are a look into what life is like in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya – you cannot use a North American lens to view the slums - the dead CAN dance. Everything from daily life itself. To surviving within the slums by means of small business enterprises as well as those who depend on prostitution and the trade of drugs for their family’s survival. In the aftermath of the election violence, life slowly returns to normal. The burnt, empty places are gradually being inhabited again by families and extended families. During the violence following the election on December 27, 2007, more than 200,000 refugees fled the violence and many were orphaned from their loved ones. This is everyday life within an area of the world that does not get touched often. These are the people and these are their stories. This is life within the slums where people are categorically invisible.
