About the Book
Vanishing Points reflects a personal, idiosyncratic approach to New Zealand landscape photography. Each image is a response to to a particular moment, a fleeting mood, a momentary conjugation of light, space and form, meeting in the eye of the camera. Each moment tells its own story, a story as tentative and ambiguous as the process of capturing it.
A fellow photographer suggested that this approach resounds with that of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who once said "Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again." His quote inspired the title of this volume, which unfolds in three chapters.
Oceanscapes is a collection of images taken mainly in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, following a path along the southern coastline of the Manukau Harbour, then along the west coast from Whatipu to Muruwai.
The Dreamscapes were inspired by many of the same locations, but inhabit a more subjective, abstracted space, transformed by time exposures, superimposition and the alchemical properties of light.
Mountainscapes draws together images from a number of locations on the North and South Islands, including the Tongariro, Arthur's Pass and Fiordland National Parks.
