About the Book
The Chalk Gallery Lewes is celebrating with an all inclusive exhibition at the Towner Gallery. All Chalk members past and present have been asked to contribute to the exhibition.
This book is a reflection of the expertise and artistry of the artists who stand and have stood under the Chalk banner and may it go on flying for many years to come.
I grew up in West Yorkshire at the foot of the Pennines. The bleak beauty of the rocky crags and moors surrounding our farm continues to inform my work. I have lived in East Sussex since 1997 and am particularly inspired by the shapes and moods of the South Downs. I strive to create paintings with presence, paintings which have atmosphere and countenance. For the last couple of years I have been working in a beautiful light-filled studio in Forest Row exploring tools and techniques which disguise the hand of the artist. I have found in this limitation and challenge a greater freedom. In my practice I explore light and darkness and pure, lyrical colour journeys, working with transparency and glazing to create vibrant surfaces. I am engaged in a passionate journey to rediscover beauty and uncover the unknown. I am an artist at the Chalk Gallery, Lewes and exhibit regularly in the South of England.
