About the Book
My series The Valley is about a small cluster of towns within the Appalachian Mountains in Central Pennsylvania and my family. This area is nicknamed “The Valley” because of these mountains. Although the photographs are first and foremost my own personal reflection, they also show a portrait of the working/middle class of Pennsylvania. Frank Gohlke, I believe, said it best: “It is about the look of a place, about the persistence of the past in the appearance of the present. It is about me.” This is why I go back to these places and photograph what remains and what is changing in The Valley.
