    About the Book

    Edit

This catalogue was created to document a sculpture exhibit by William King at The Lyceum Gallery, located in the Montaukett Learning Resource Center on the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead. The exhibit is called, "William King: Inside the Artist’s Studio" and it will be opening on March 5 and run through April 6, 2012. Beth Giles and Margery Gosnell-Qua are the co-curators of this exhibit.

"William King: Inside the Artist’s Studio" gives viewers a glimpse into the creative realm of the internationally celebrated artist, William King. Enchanted by William King’s workshop, the curators became interested in Mr. King’s world, full of maquettes, carving tools, sewing machines, and a fresh fall of wood shavings: an atmosphere borne of years of creative activity. The exhibit is designed to encompass a myriad of animated works that span Mr. King’s career – the witty, gestural figures of all sizes engaged in dance and conversation, some decorated in playful patterns, others showing the raw materials (wood, metal, and fabric) that Mr. King used to create his sculptures. This booklet describes the curators’ special encounter with Mr. King at his East Hampton studio.

Mr. King’s resume includes a long list of accolades. He has been engaged in the art of creating sculptures for over sixty years and has exhibited his work at The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. His work is in a number of museum collections including The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Mr. King is the recipient of a number of prestigious awards including a Fulbright Grant (1954), a National Academy of Design Gold Metal (1986), and The Guild Hall Lifetime Achievement award (1997).
