"It's okay," she told Poppy, mustering her most confident older-sister voice. "It's just the house being old. The latch probably doesn't catch properly. I'll tell Dad to fix it."

"But what if—" Poppy started.

"What if what?"

"What if it's a ghost?"

Lark wanted to laugh it off, to tell Poppy that ghosts weren't real, that she'd been watching too many cartoons. But the truth was, Lark had been wondering the same thing herself.
