    About the Book

    Edit

My work addresses the question of what it means to be a Dominican woman, and how these traits translate from one generation to the next. I explore this concept with emphasis on Dominican culture after it’s fusion with North American culture. I believe that as we are displaced from our birthplace, it continues to color our identities.

This body of work explores the concept of identity in four generations of the Dominican women in my family, particularly as it applies to immigration, survival, and gender. This exploration lead me to work out of my comfort zone as a painter, and to explore other mediums that best expresses our story, such as sculpture and installations. It is vital to me as an artist that the work be accessible to the viewer so I have added writing to clue the viewer in on the character of these women.

The sculptures have been painted according to the palette of family’s roots in the Caribbean. There are no literal skin tones, instead the colors of the waterways, vegetation, seeds, and flowers of our place of origin, the Dominican Republic.

Identity is not described merely by what we inherit from out ancestors , but also what we inherit from the earth. The landscape and the person are one element, residing inside each other.
