About the Book
The simple and startling claim of this book is that the four natural elements of air, earth, fire and water combine in pairs to create distinct and definable subsets that occur everywhere in nature and also, as Jung recognised, within us all, manifesting as personality types or archetypes. Everywhere in human life these twelve elemental combinations appear as tropes and these are laid out and described in detail accompanied by exquisite illustrations by Herewood Gabriel. Going much further than in his previous books, The Magic Circle of the Soul and The Future Will Be Green, the author details here for the first time the negative aspects of these elemental combinations and reveals twelve new, 'mirror' archetypes.
Tammo de Jongh, later known as The Venerable Anelog, came from an artistic family. Anelog was truly a Renaissance man and developed his rich inner life as well as continuing with his active campaigning life. He was one of the founders of the Environmental Movement. At a community holiday in Wales he inspired a journalist, James Adler, to write the Green Manifesto of 1965. In 1956 he had a profound experience where he realised the significance of the 4 elements. He developed this further and saw that the 4 elements could be combined with each other to form 12 archetypes, which gave a more specific description of human qualities. In 1960 he lived with Kenneth Carter, who helped him formulate the 24 Soul Types and Barry Slater helped him delineate the 12 archetypes. Together With his campaigning work, he continued to hone this remarkable discovery, with the help of Sebastien Michael and Herewood Gabriel during his later monastic years, right up until his death in 1997.
